New Roy Halladay book examines his battle with depression

Former Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay certainly battled his demons, and now we'll get a behind-the-scenes look into the Hall of Famer's historic career.

A soon to be released book titled "Doc: The Life of Roy Halladay," by Todd Zolecki details the various highs and lows Halladay experienced throughout his career and during retirement, according to the Toronto Sun's Rob Longley.

Halladay died in an aviation accident when his ICON A5 amphibious plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida in 2017. The former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher reportedly had a dangerous mix of amphetamine, morphine and other prescription drugs in his system and was doing acrobatics before the time of his death, according to the New York Times' Michael Levenson.

“He couldn’t ever just stop and appreciate where he was and what he had,” Brandy Halladay relates to Zolecki in the book, according to the Toronto Sun. “Roy, his whole life, was about work, so when he wasn’t working, he was lost. He was so lost. Then the depression came.”

Halladay is a two-time Cy Young winner and eight-time All-Star. He went 203-105 through 16 years in Major League Baseball with a 3.38 ERA and 1.178 WHIP.

While many saw a dominant pitcher on the mound, it wasn't until he retired that fans truly saw his struggles with depression and addiction. Zolecki's book will give us an even more in-depth look at Halladay's life beyond baseball, and things certainly will get emotional.

The Hall of Famer also has an ESPN special airing on May 29 titled "Imperfect: The Roy Halladay Story," that will also give us an in-depth look at the pitcher's life.
